Age Pyramids

Age pyramids, also known as population pyramids, are graphical representations of the age and sex distribution of a population. Traditionally, these pyramids have a wide base and narrow top, reflecting a large number of young people and a smaller number of elderly. However, this shape is changing.

In the USA, the population pyramid has been becoming more columnar over the past two decades. In 2000, the pyramid had a broad base, indicative of a large young population. By 2020, the base had narrowed significantly, suggesting a decrease in the proportion of young people.

The situation in the EU-27 is even more striking. The 2019 population pyramid shows a thin base and top, with the largest age cohorts between 30 and 60. In this example, each woman in the first generation has children equal to the average fertility rate.
